Tourism in Elne

A town with a very long history, Elne has long been in rivalry with Perpignan. An important stronghold in the Middle Ages, it retains its ancient walls and three gates (de Balagué, de Collioure and de Perpignan ), which are listed as historic monuments.

Built between the 11ᵉ and 14ᵉ centuries, Elne Cathedral has impressive dimensions. Its austere façade and two bell towers give it the overall appearance of a fortress. The cloister where the cathedral’s canons lived can also be visited: it houses several exhibition rooms.

A specialist in Roussillon landscapes, painter Etienne Terrus was born and died in Elne. The town has dedicated a museum to him, housing a major collection of works by the artist, as well as his friends Matisse and Maillol. Also worth a visit in Elne is the Maternité Suisse, a place steeped in history which, between 1939 and 1944, welcomed almost 500 pregnant women rescued from the camps.

The Catalan region offers a wealth of things to discover. Just a stone’s throw from your mobile home is the upper town of Elne, an ancient fortified city of the Kingdom of Aragon. If you’re looking for something to do in the Pyrénées-Orientales, consider a stroll through the old town of Elne: the episcopal seat of Roussillon from the 6ᵉ century to the 17ᵉ century, its cathedral and adjoining marble cloister form a magnificent Romanesque architectural ensemble.

The town is also home to the workshops of numerous arts and craftspeople, and bustles with markets three days a week. The beach at Elne, located at Bocal-del-Tec at the ancient mouth of the river Tech, borders your Camping, following on from the south beach at Saint-Cyprien. When you stay at Camping Cala-Gogo, you’ll be swimming in Elne!
